TOPIC: Large Scale Production Equipment for Heat Treating on PM Parts, Improvement and Innovation on high pressure gas quenching applications
Today Low Pressure Carburizing (LPC) followed by High Pressure Gas Quenching (HPGQ) is an established process to produce high performance components for conventional steels in order to combine high surface hardness and fatigue strength.
Using this base technology and its ability to combine high quality metallurgy and cost savings it can also be used in Powdered Metal (PM) processes as it becomes more and more prevalent in gear development for the automotive industry (especially in the transmission applications as synchronizer hubs/rings, sliding sleeves, …etc).
This presentation will evaluate the latest applications on sintering, dewaxing and hardening and the possibility of using vacuum furnaces and high pressure gas quenching as well as LPC with a review of the specific challenges associated with PM parts in these processes.
