Test Facility for AI Manufacturing Opens at Georgia Tech
The Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia, has expanded its Advanced Manufacturing Pilot Facility into a larger, artificial intelligence (AI)-focused manufacturing testbed designed to support companies, researchers, and students. The renovated 60,000-square-foot facility officially opened in April 2026 and provides a controlled environment where emerging AI and automation technologies can be tested before deployment in operational factories.
AI tools for manufacturing are advancing rapidly, yet manufacturers often hesitate to integrate them without clear evidence of performance improvements. At the same time, many startup companies developing manufacturing software lack access to industrial-scale equipment needed to demonstrate their systems. To address this gap, Georgia Tech created a collaborative space where academic researchers and industry partners can evaluate AI-enabled manufacturing solutions together.
Originally established in 2017, the facility aimed to bridge the “valley of death” between academic research and commercial implementation, initially focusing on aerospace, automotive, and medical manufacturing. In 2022, Georgia Tech received a $65 million grant to support the Georgia Artificial Intelligence Manufacturing Technology Corridor (GA-AIM). By 2024, the university had invested more than $23 million to expand equipment, workforce programs, and infrastructure, including robotic automation, cybersecurity testing, wireless communications, and manufacturing data management systems.
A key innovation of the expansion is a knowledge management system capable of connecting diverse equipment, software platforms, and data formats without requiring all data to be centralized. The facility operates as a shared user environment, supporting industry partnerships, defense collaborations, and student education while advancing research in AI-driven manufacturing systems.
